Ed Lane, former Cary coach, dies
"It seemed that he worked on the fields all of the time," he said. "We planted trees and watered. He really built it from the ground up."
Charlie Adams, who was later head of the N.C. High School Athletic Association, coached basketball at Cary for four years while Lane was there.
"Ed was a great disciplinarian," Adams said. "He was an outstanding coach and produced some great football teams. He always seemed to get the most out of the talent that he had."
Adams said he remembered Lane working to build the wrestling program.
"He got it started in the lobby at the school," Adams said. "Few schools had wrestling in the early '60s. He really worked at building a foundation."
Charlie Maiden, who succeeded Adams as the Imps' basketball coach, said he still uses skills Lane taught him.
"He was the most organized person I have ever seen," Maiden said. "He would plan practices down to the minute. He knew exactly what he wanted to accomplish every day."
